In email on the UK group, I noticed a little comment from Mike Lennon.
My insurer wants to double my premium due to all the foil claims over the past few months to £580 ! Any suggestions?
So I have a question, how many foils have been claimed ? I only know of one person who has claimed a replacement foil on insurance.

I know three people who have met sandbanks/mud at speed – why wouldn’t you claim?
I think there is a fair amount of trying it on by the insurance co in this instance…

If you sail into a sand bank or if the fault is from manufacture, I think the insurance company would be right to reject the claim.
I hope that the numerous early bladerider foil failures were covered by Bladrerider because if these were claimed on insurance we will all be paying big on our insurance to cover the Bladerider development costs.
My philosophy is to only claim when the breakage is something I did not contribute to. If I build something a bit experimental and it fails I improve it and fix it.
I have made one claim in 10 years for a broken mast. No foil claims.

I’ve never made a claim on my Moth(s).

@Cookie At least I am not the only one (to run aground) … I never said that people shouldn’t claim. If I was claming for running aground, I would have made 4 claims myself …
@Scott I didn’t think you ever did, that was a really bad month for you though …
@Phil what constitutes a “manufacturer fault”, would be an interesting thing to define insurance wise. Does that equal every failure that is out of warranty ?

Club marine won’t insure moths anymore – which is interesting since they are a supporter of a certain high profile moth sailor. Insurers get scared anytime carbon fibre is mentioned, I have found.

I have claimed a centreboard for the moth, both vertical and horizontal, but had more claims in 470 for masts…(I think 4 masts in 8 years, memory fading)
Moth builder’s warranty’s are good, and good on them for doing it.
Insurance over here seems okay or I just have an awesome insurance broker. If your struggling, Will Logan in Tassie knows all there is to know on insurance

@Scott lucky you have taken the hits yourself as with the amount you do, you would have put an inaurance company under by now
