McDougall’s fleet

Looking at the current boats on Scott’s Worlds gear list there is something quite shocking in the mix. The boats that have been designed by Andrew McDougall comprises 86% of the fleet.

Breaking down by builder is no less interesting with McConaghy having built 77% of the fleet.

The numbers show all too well that the older designs, the Hungry Tiger and Prowler are perceived seen as being past their use by date. I find this a bit strange, as with hull not even in the water, in theory, a Prowler with Gen3 foils and set-up could be just as competitive as a current ’09 boat.

Homebuilding too appears to almost have died out with Joe the sole home builder in the fleet, and even he is not using home built foils.

The transition to two piece “bulbed foils” is now also complete with only the two prowlers the boats likely to have one piece foils.

Skinny masts are being use by all but four competitors and North sails has made a sizeable dent in both the mast and sail supply markets.

The most interesting thing is that at sticker price, the fleet costs ~$680,650. Throwing in travel, flights accommodation and extra bits, the fleet racing at the Gorge as cost the sailors over $1M USD.
